Donna's letter regarding camp Joslin for diabetic children

As many of you know, my son Gianni has been living with type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes for more than half of his ten years now. He has not only survived, but THRIVED! As he grows, I am amazed to witness him learning more and more about his chronic condition, for which there is currently no cure, and which will affect him for the rest of his life. And I am fascinated by his maturity and responsibility when it comes to taking on the necessary tasks of diabetec management each and every day. He is so brave and increasingly independent as he tests his blood ten to twelve times a day, changes his infusion site for his insulin pump every two days, keeps track of his carbohydrate intake and gives himself insulin every time he eats.

Camp Joslin is a special place for diabetics like Gianni, where these children can enjoy the benefits and FUN of overnight summer camp, while living in a safe and medically-supervised environment. Camp Joslin provides diabetic boys with an exciting combination of camping, fun, diabetes education, support, and recreation, all in a very safe environment! The camp is located on a beautiful lake in a wooded setting.

As you can imagine, the cost of such a camp is outrageously expensive, and out-of-reach for many in this economy. So, next month, my family and I will be participating in a Work-A-Thon at Camp Joslin in order to help defray the cost of sending diabetic children to summer camp. We will be working at the camp over the weekend of May 16th and 17th, raking, cleaning, and picking up debris, to help make the camp ready for the first summer session which begins in June.
